Recently I escaped the cooling weather in Melbourne and headed to France for a couple of months. During that time I was road-tripping all over the place, but more on that in upcoming episodes…

.

Close to the end of my journey I connected with friend to the Loulabelle’s FrancoFiles podcast Ruby Boukabou and chatted in a podcast episode with some observations from this year’s Cannes Film Festival. We had tickets for the opening night red carpet event and we were in the room for the opening ceremony too, to see Robert De Niro receive his honorary Palme d’Or presented by Leonardo DiCaprio. I felt a shift in Cannes this time, with a more overt political statement being made, particularly in the opening night speeches from De Niro, DiCaprio and head of the 2025 Cannes Jury Juliette Binoche.

.

Ruby and I also spoke about the opening night movie “Partir Un Jour”, the other goings-on in Cannes as well as what to do to escape the craziness for just a short time or a day-trip! We also touched on when the best time is, to visit Cannes for your specific purposes. Unless you’re there for the festival, May might not be the time for you.

.

There was one particular day during my time in Cannes when I decided to get out of the town and caught a ferry to an enchanting little island off the mainland coast, Île Saint-Honorat. On this little slice of heaven, there are beautiful coves for swimming, or just sitting and reading a book in amongst the thick forest areas. Meander through the olive groves and vineyards or head to the local monastery for some respite from the heat and some quiet time in the historic l’eglise. With the blueness of the waters all around, the wild bird life roaming and the rustic restaurant set in picturesque surroundings, this was the perfect escape from the jet set pace of Cannes.
